The Process of Stem-Cell Therapy in Pets
Adipose stem cells are healing cells that can become other cell types, such as cartilage and bone. Within adipose (fat) tissue, there are many adult stem cells. Using stem cell therapy, we can isolate these cells, wake them up, and inject them into damaged areas. Over time, these cells work to replace damaged tissue.
Prior to the procedure, your pet will be placed under a general anesthetic, and we will remove 2-4 tablespoons of fat through a surgical incision. A trained technician then carefully processes the specimen in our office. After the cells have been isolated and activated, they are ready to be injected into the affected areas, such as the joints of arthritic pets.
What does stem-cell therapy treat?
Veterinary stem-cell therapy helps treat a range of conditions, diseases and injuries in either cats or dogs. Some of the most common ones include:- Spinal cord injuries
- Inflammation
- Damaged ligaments
- Fractured bones
- Hip Dysplasia
- Osteoarthritis
How long does it take to see results?
Sometimes, it can be really hard to predict the final results of stem-cell therapy. In most cases, you can expect to see improvements beginning between 3-8 weeks after therapy. If successful, relief lasts anywhere from 1-3 years after initial treatment. As a safeguard, we always recommend banking your pet’s cells for future use.
Our Huntsville veterinarians will determine your cat's or dog's suitability for stem-cell therapy based on the age, breed, general health, previous treatment and response history, severity, and duration of your companion's condition, and sedation risk of your pet.
